CORRIE VAN BINSBERGEN ON VPROJAZZLIVE

Thursday, November 1, 2012, the VPROJazzLive radio show will take a look at one of percussionist Joshua Samson and bass player Tony Overwater's 'secret concerts'.
Every month, Joshua and Tony organise a concert at a secret location (the attick of a hotel, an old factory, an airplane, ...). Only those who subscribed to their mailing-list receive the actual adress...
Last September, the duo invited Corrie van Binsbergen for an improvised concert.
The result can be heard on November 1 on Dutch Radio 6.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA UPDATE

NEW PHLITMAN & KANG ALBUM TO BE RELEASED THIS WEEK

MACHACEK, PREUSCHL & PIRKER - FAT

It's rather tough to describe the new album by Alex Machacek, Raphael Preuschl and Herbert Pirker without using a list of overwhelming adjectives.
Let me just say that Alex Machacek's major infuences are Alan Holdsworth and Frank Zappa.

Astonishing.
Both from a technical as from a compositional point of view.

Out on Abstract Logix.

Here's the same line-up. Live at 'Porgy & Bess' in 2010.

ELISABETH ENGDAHL & THOMAS GUSTAFSSON - PIECE IN PEACE

The Swedish Country & Eastern record label is known for its excellent jazz and rock albums (a couple of which include keyboard virtuoso Mats Öberg) and for its fine series of albums of Indian music.

More recently, C&E added two classical albums to their repertoire and one of these is the impressive "Piece In Peace" by Elisabeth Engdahl and Thomas Gustafsson.
Recorded in the Chrystinae Kyrka in Gothenburg earlier this year, this album features Elisabeth Engdahl on the church organ, and Thomas Gustaffson on soprano saxophone.
It's pretty incredible to hear how those two instruments blend together.  Next to the original compositions the duo also recorded Keith Jarrett's 'My Song' and the late Joe Zawinul's 'A Remark You Made' and 'In A Silent Way'.
A fine discovery.

Here's Mats Gustafsson in trio.

TRIO AMALGAMATE - S/T

Fans of eclectic, experimental music should take note!
Guitarist Gene Pritsker, 7-string bass guitar player Dan Cooper and drummer Gernot Bernroider make up the Trio Amalgamate. On this eponymous album they play original, mostly instrumental compositions.
My chemistry books define 'amalgam'as a substance formed by the reaction of mercury with another metal. The liner notes of "Trio Amalgamate" explain 'amagamate' as a verb: 'combine or unite to form one organisation of structure'.
I like this definition. And I also like the music that it produces.
The "Trio Amalgamate" album offers a fine selection of compositions. Mixtures of, or equilibria between, jazz, free improvisation and contemporary classical music.

DANE RUNYON - LOOKING BELOW

Here's what Mike Keneally said:
"A few years ago at a Taylor Guitars clinic Bryan Beller and I were doing, a young man introduced himself and showed us his Wooden Smoke tattoo (we immortalized the occurrence on keneally.com at the time). He also handed me a CD of his new music, which I listened to a couple of nights later and was floored. Bryan heard it as well and was equally floored. We got on the phone to this guy, who was and is Dane Runyon, and told him how floored we were. The music, insanely melodic and instantly memorable art-pop, was very close to being releasable in its current state; I told Dane that if he was into it we could get Marco Minnemann to add drums to some of it, remix it with Mike Harris and I would be happy to play some things on it as well. This all happened and now the album is ready for you to hear. It is BEAUTIFUL. Please treat yourself and visit danerunyon.com and check this action out."

Now who am I to question Mike Keneally, and so I did check this action out.
Dane Runyon's "Looking Below" is a great album. It presents 10 beautiful, intimate & melodic songs.
You can tell that Dane has listened a lot to MK. I love the vocal arrangements. They fit perfectly with the 'acoustic' sound.
Melomaniacs will be glad to hear that a lot of attention has been paid to the actual release. "Looking Below" has been released on clear vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies.
Do check it out.

Highly recommended.

THE FUSION SYNDICATE

October 12, 2012- Los Angeles, CA - One of the most amazing collection of jazz-fusion and progressive rock legends ever to assemble on one CD has happened with the new release by The Fusion Syndicate, available October 16, 2012 on Purple Pyramid Records. Brought together by multi-instrumentalist, producer Billy Sherwood (Yes, CIRCA:), who gave us the fascinating release by the Prog Collective earlier this year. Now, Billy has produced, recorded and written tracks for a new jazz-rock-fusion supergroup of musical virtuosos – The Fusion Syndicate!

“When I was asked to write/produce a fusion record I jumped at the chance. I've always had a deep love of Jazz and Fusion music having grown up listening to Weather Report, Return To Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra among many others in the genre. The record has become a musical dream team, including some of the world's most renowned players in the field. The music reflects a time when virtuosity was the standard and incredible musicianship was the order of the day. Each artist sharing their talent and skill, blending it all into a bigger musical picture, creating an amazing expression of unity and purpose. I'm honored to be a part of it all and I thank all the artists who joined me on this journey, they have all lifted the music to a higher level.” - Billy Sherwood, producer

MEN & VOLTS PLAY BEEFHEART

In 1979, Phil Kaplan, Jon Proudman and Brian Frank wanted to put together a Beefheart tribute band. By the fall of 1979 the first line-up of Men & Volts was finalized: Phil Kaplan on guitar and vocals, David Greenberger on bass, Jon Proudman on drums, Roger Stevenson on vocals & various, Tom Hall on sax, and Greg Fromohoio on marimba. After a couple of gigs they were told that they had to perform original material as cover bands weren't booked. The hardcore membership (Phil, David, Jon & Roger) decided to keep the name Men & Volts, wrote material, rehearsed and began playing out again in early 1981.

Spring 1982, their first EP got released. This first release was entitled "Rhythms & Blues" and it had a distinctly Beefheartian flavor. It's recommended listening for every Beefheart aficionado.

After this initial EP, Men & Volts released "Hooterville" in 1983. Their first album.

A couple of albums followed, but it seemed that the world wasn't ready for Men & Volts...

Fast forward to 2002 when I contacted the band, asking for extra info on their short time as a Beefheart band. Among other things, I learned that some rehearsals and concerts had been recorded...

Ten years later, October 2012, these recordings surfaced and reached the United Mutations headquarters. Complete with covers and all.

This is great stuff. I can already show you the pictures, and I have good hope that I will be able to share the music with you soon as well.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - RE-MACHINED

"Re-Machined - a tribute to Deep Purple's Machine Head" collects a fine number of musicians paying tribute to Deep Purple. I especially like Santana's take on 'Smoke On The Water', and Metallica's excellent 'When A Blind Man Cries'.
You might have read that this album also contains a Steve Vai contribution... Well, it doesn't.
This album also got released in a package with the "Classic Rock Presents" magazine, and it's that CD that has the Steve Vai contribution as a bonus...

CUCCURULULLO BRILLO BRULLO IN CONCERT

Dutch band Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo will be performing the music of Frank Zappa in concert on 2012/11/30 in Delft, NL, and 2012/12/02 in Engelbert, NL.

In the not so distant past, Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo released an excellent all-Zappa tribute album and played at Zappanele.
My favourite moment, however, was at one of their 2006 gigs. The band had scheduled three gigs with Ike Willis and Muffin Men's Martin Smith when, out of the blue, Jeff Hollie (sax on Zappa's "Joe's Garage") turned up and played along for a couple of tunes.

Anyway, after a two-year-hiatus Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo is back. For the occasion, the band has been enlarged with two former Muffin Men and has been transformed into and eight-piece ensemble.

  • Reinier Parengkuan: vocals
  • Derk Groen: guitar
  • Ron van der Kraan: vocals
  • Paul de Jong: guitar
  • Arie Verhaar: drums
  • Evert Willemsteijn: bass
  • Martin Smith: trumpet
  • Andy Frizell: saxophone & flute

SUN RA ARKESTRA WITH COLEMAN LEMIEUX DANCE COMPANY IN TORONTO 2012 10 20

from the Saturn newsgroup

Direct from its triumphant European tour, the Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will continue its 2012 World Tour in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, October 20, 2012 with a collaboration featuring the Coleman Lemieux Dance Company. This "Space is the Place" spectacular will be held at the Regent Part Arts and Cultural Centre, 585 Dundas Street East, Toronto (between Sumach and Sackville Streets) between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm on October 20, 2012.

Bill Coleman’s "Space is the Place" (featuring "Hymn to the Universe") is a free theatrical performance, site-specific event and gathering rolled into one that will bring alive the Regent Park Arts & Cultural Centre with music and dance, and connect the newly opened Centre to its surrounding community.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will be joined by students from the Regent Park School of Music and the artists of Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie. This event will consist of a ‘lobby sound symphony,’ and a special adaptation of Bill Coleman’s celebrated performance Hymn to the Universe, followed by a community gathering.

Choreographer Bill Coleman, best known for his ground-breaking site-specific works, will be joined by eight dancers, including Carol Prieur, voted Female Dancer of the Year by Europe's respected Tanz Magazine, and Andrea Weber of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Visual design and costumes are by award-winning Métis visual artist Edward Poitras and Toronto fashion icons Hoax Couture designers Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell.
