THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER BAND - LIVE IN SÃO PAULO

The Central Scrutinizer is an eight-piece band from São Paulo, Brasil.
The band has been playing the music of Frank Zappa for over a decade!!
In 1997, they did a concert of Zappa music with former Zappa sideman Ike Willes, intended for a release on the Muffin Records Productions label. Unfortunately, Muffin Records Productions changed course and the Central Scrutinizer / Ike Willis collaboration never got released.

Last year, The Central Scrunizer Band recorded the concert that they did at the Culture Centre of São Paulo on 01/06/2009, and this was recently made available on DVD.

"Live In São Paulo" is over 100 minutes of a great performance.
What you get is not the most professional shot video, but you do get a great show: a nice selection of songs, impressive vocals and superb musicianship (with some fabulous solos).

I love it.
This is essential listening for every fan of the music of Frank Zappa !

AYNSLEY DUNBAR - MUTINY

Aynsley Dunbar first met Frank Zappa as a member of The Jeff Beck Group, but solidified that meeting by jamming with him at Belgium's Amougies Festival in the fall of 1969, where Dunbar's band "Retaliation" was performing, Alex Dmochowski was playing bass with them. Zappa was there as Master of Ceremony for the event.
March / April 1970, Aynsley Dunbar recorded Zappa's 'Willie The Pimp'. The track got released on the album "Blue Whale" later that year.
Late 1969 / early 1970, Aynsley Dunbar joined Frank Zappa's band. He recorded and toured with Zappa from 1970 until the end of 1971.
Since then, Aynsley Dunbar performed and recorded with David Bowie, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, and lots of others.

"Mutiny" is Aynsley Dunbar's latest release. It's a nice blues album and contains a lot of co-written compositions from throughout Dunbar's career, as well as some nice suprises. One of these is the excellent 'For What It's Worth' that we all know from the Buffalo Springfield. The other one is a bluesy rendition of Frank Zappa's 'Chunga's Revenge'.

Excellent.

ZAPPOSTROPHE 113

Earlier today, the latest issue of Zappostrophe walked in.
The first issue of Zappostrophe saw the light of day in 1986 ! Over twenty years and 113 issues later this little fanzine still collects Frank Zappa related info from all over the world.
This time, it's all about the "Joe's Garage" musical, about bands that perform the music of Frank Zappa and the Gail Zappa / Arf Society lawsuit, about"Cruisin' With Ruben & The Jets", about the "Frank Zappa Day" in Baltimore, plus some short bits about The Fraternity Of Men, and Mitch Mitchell...

CRAM - FOR A DOG

cram: for a dog
(2008, cd, nl, brokkenrecords 001)
CRAM stands for
  • Corrie van Binsbergen - guitar
  • Rutger van Otterloo - baritone & soprano saxophone
  • Arend Niks - drums
  • Mick Paauwe - bass .
CRAM i's a dutch quartet that plays some very zappa-esque jazz / rock / pop kinda music. It's instrumental music, beautiful compositions, great solos and very funny.
I've seen the band in concert three times the last year, and I was blown away each and every time.
And the CD is even better...

"For A Dog" is the first release of CRAM and it's also the first release on Corrie van Binsbergen's Brokkenrecords label.
In my humble opinion, this is an album that you should hear.
Highly recommended!

GARY LUCAS - BEYOND THE PALE

gary lucas vs the dark poets: beyond the pale
(2008, cd, uk, some bizarre)

Gary Lucas has a new album out.
And, yes, The Dark Poets contribute to half of the tracks on this disc, but there's also a couple of solo tracks, collaborations with sample wizards, and even a Gods & Monsters recording on it.
So the title might be a little misleading, but "Beyond The Pale" is a fine album.
If you're in to the music of Gary Lucas, you don't want to miss this one.

DILEDADAFISH

diledadafish: historical flush
(1996, cd, switzerland, yucca tree records ytrddfhf)

Diledadafish?
According to the Yucca Tree label, Diledadafish makes "contemporary Swiss folk music with the sense of dadaistic humour and the feeling of red garlic". Well, whatever one calls it, this is excellent stuff.
Is it a combination of Dilettante / Dada / Fish.
Or maybe
Richard E. "Dile / red" Deutsch (Keyboards, Computer, Sampler)
Beatrice "Dada" (Saxophon, Stimme, Lärm)
Franz "Fish" (Gitarre, Bass, Stimme, Vocoder, Pitch Shifter)

Anyway, Diledadafish's coverversion of The Residents' 'Walter Westinghouse' fits appropriatly.
Weird... Check it out...

UNMATCHED VIII

Four years after number 7, I didn't really expect another volume of the Unmatched series.
I consider the Unmatched album as an important part of my Frank Zappa discography, so I was more than glad to see three (!!) new discs pop up.
The Central Scrutinizer Band is on it with a fine version of 'Andy'. Ozkar's on it with one of the funkiest and jazziest versions of Pygmy Twylyte that I ever heard, and he gives 'Willie The Pimp' a superb South American arrangement...
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I love it.
Essential listening for every Zappa fan!!
Check it out.

http://www.halloffame.es

UNMATCHED IX

This Unmatched series just keeps on amazing me. Again, Luis Gonzales and Anrdès Mastrangelo have compiled a beautiful album of bands performing the music of Frank Zappa.
If you know the Unmatched series, I don't need to tell you that it's all about different arrangements and performances of Frank Zappa's music.

My favourite versions on this album are Romàn's 'Holiday In Berlin, full blown' (very jazz from hell !!), Guillermo Urìa's 'Montana' (on cello, or is it midi??) and Carucha's 'The Duke Of Prunes' (I love that bass !!!).
And there's so much more incredible stuff.
You really need to hear this.

http://www.halloffame.es/

UNMATCHED X

The tenth volume in the extraordinary Unmatched series has Caballero Reynaldo team up with his friends for some genuine country music.
Don't get me wrong, Caballero Reynaldo and his Grand Kazoo band don't just play any country music. No, no, no. They recorded some very familiar tunes, and wrapped them in a country package.
'Lumpy Gravy', 'Pojama People', 'The Torturne Never Stops', ... 53 minutes of Frank Zappa compositions, and each and everyone of them sound like they were played by a country band.
I love it.
You can hear the banjo, the mouth-harp, the honkey tonk piano.
The best thing about this album is that it's not just funny. It has some great arrangements, and each song sounds like it was recorded by a different band. I've played it three times in a row, and all these images keep popping up in my head: Ennio Morricone, Johnny Cash, ...

The Good, the Bad,... and Unmatched volume 10.

N.M. BROCK & THE PGSOR IN CONCERT

info from Jenny:

Hello Friends of The School of Rock!

Beginning this Saturday we are going back to our roots and bringing back Mr Napoleon Murphy Brock...the ORIGINAL GUEST PROFESSOR.

We have had plenty of wonderful artists come in since we kicked off the Guest Professor series way back in 2004, but none have done a better job with the kids. Napi is a endless fountain of music, love, and enthusiasm, and his wide smile spreads quickly among the kids.

So...please come see this show. Its awesome. And if you don't mind, feel free to forward this along to your lists. The shows will be great, and if people are actually there to see them then they will be awesome.

BRIAN PETERS & PAUL WERTICO - AMPERSAND

Last week, Brian Peters' and Paul Wertico's "Ampersand" jumped into my CD player...

"Ampersand" kicks off with 'Sinking Of The Zenobia'. After a quick google search, I found out that the Zenobia is a world-famous ship-wreck somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. I would have thought that the sinking of the Zenobia would be considered a disaster, but according to Brian Peters and Paul Wertico, it must have been a rather psychedelic happening. 'Sinking Of The Zenobia' almost made me float…
'The Tundra' is more up my alley: a two chord vamp with a fine laid-back zappa-esque guitar solo. This is without question one of the better tracks of the album. Excellent!!'November Frontlines' slows things down a bit again, and toys around a bit with 'Amazing Grace', and it makes a great intro for 'Crayfish', the fourth track on the album.'Crayfish' goes for the more jazzy approach. Another excellent instrumental track. Most of the tracks on "Ampersand" are over five minutes long. 'Wormwood' even spans 8 minutes. Is this a fretless bass guitar? It sure sounds like one. It's my favourite track!!The album continues with the experimental 'Boolean Mortality', the dynamic '& Hearts", 'Halyard', and more.

"Ampersand" is a very impressive, instrumental, guitar-orientated album. Paul Wertico (drums) and Brian Peters (everything else) sound like they have been playing together for ages. The album title fits the package, or the other way round, if you prefer.

Available from CDBaby.
Recommended listening.

3 DUBBEL DUTCH

"3 DUBBEL DUTCH" is 12 astonishing musicians sharing the stage.
"3 DD" combines the musicians of Drummers Double Bill, Talking Cows, and CRAM. Each band plays a number of compositions, but the musicians perform in different combinations as well. And in-between some of the pieces Vera Vingerhoeds shares some thoughts with the performers.

I was fortunate to see 3 DD in concert last Saturday, and boy-oh-boy-oh-boy, this was good.
This was so much more than a concert.

The above picture shows Joost Buis (trombone), Arjen Groter (double bass), Corrie van Binsbergen (guitar) and even the right arm of drummer Rob Verdurmen during the 3 Dubbel Dutch concert at the Plusetage in Baarle Nassau on 2009 02 07.

The band will be playing three more concerts the next couple of days. If you live somewhere in the neighbourhood, you've got no excuse not to go.

DRUMMERS DOUBLE BILL - 2 TEXEL

For their second release, Drummers Double Bill worked together with dutch artist/ poet Jan Wolkers. It's another very fine release. Contemporary jazz with lots of room for improvisation(and fun !!). Angular rhythms, beautiful melodies, performed by a superb band.
The music for the album got recorded live in concert, with the Jan Wolkers' poems dubbed over the music afterwards.
I love it.

DRUMMERS DOUBLE BILL - S.O.S.

January 14, 2006, I saw Drummers Double Bill in concert at the 'Plusetage' club in Baarle Nassau, NL. If I'm not mistaken, their debut "S.O.S." album had just been released.
Drummers Double Bill was build around Rob Verdurmen (drummer for the Willem Breuker Kollektief) and Arend Niks (drummer for Corrie en de Grote Brokken, Niks Project, ...), so I remember being curious of what they would be playing, especially since they would bring along a fine group of musicians, including one of my favourite guitar players.
The concert was great, and the "S.O.S." album made it to the top of my want-list.

SUN RA - LIVE IN CLEVELAND

It seems like the next couple of months will see another fine number of Sun Ra releases. There is a new package of Sun Ra releases due on the Transparency label (postponed by a month (or two)), and the latest Art Yard release "Nidhamu + Dark Myth Equation Visitation" will be released in March.
For starters, here's the brand-new "Live In Cleveland" album. It's out on Leo Records, and you should know that that means that it's another excellent release.
January 30, 1975, live in Cleveland.
Wish I'd been there, although this disc works fine as well.

SUN RA - PIANO RECITAL, TEATRO LA FENICE, VENEZIA

In preparation of the latest Sun Ra album on Leo Records, I played "Piano Recital, Teatro La Fenice, Venzia", a solo piano concert from November 1977.
Sun Ra, solo on the piano, performing a number of standards in-between his own compositions.
Beautiful.

KUR Forum has moved

from the KUR Forums Team:

Hey all,

Just a quick note to let you know that the forum at http://www.killuglyradio.com/forum has been put to rest. Instead, a brand new forum is awaiting your registration here:
http://forum.killuglyradio.com/

Why the move? Two reasons. First: the software that ran the current forum was way out of date and spam ridden - to the point where it became impossible to accept new accounts.
Second: the various boards had always been too idiosyncratic -- too much intricate nuance, which lead the average visitor to click away in utter confusion.
With the new forum, we aim to avoid both these pittfalls.

So go ahead and register here: http://forum.killuglyradio.com/ If you come across any difficulties, be sure to drop us a mail at killuglyradio [at] gmail {dot} com.

Regards,
The Kill Ugly Radio Forums Team.

To be quite honest, I haven't been to the KUR forum in ages. I do read the KUR blog on a regular basis, but the forum just wasn't my thing.
Anyway, it has moved, and has gotten a new software. Reason enough to check it out...

DON PRESTON'S RETROSPECTIVE IS OUT

Don Preson's latest album is out, and it's on Crossfire.
"Retrospective" is a very impressive collection of pieces from different periods of Don Preston's career. There's a stunning performance of 'I Can't Breathe' by Raw Milk, there are a couple of tunes from the Don & Bunk Show (Don's fabulous duo with Bunk Gardner), and some extraordinary performances by the Akashic Ensemble (just listen to 'Takeoff'...). And there's even more. Just click the short-cut to get the entire track-list...

The liner notes of "Retrospective" state that about half of the material on this disc has been previously released. Most of it on Don's private label Brain Records, so it's good that it has become availabe to a wider audience right now.
"Retrospective" is a great addition to the two previous Don Preston albums that got released on the Crossfire label: "Vile Foamy Ectoplasm" and "Works".
If you already have these two, you know what to expect.
If you don't have them, you've got a serious gap in your music collection. Don't forget: this is Don Preston. He was jamming and jazzing to amoeba movies in the early sixties. He joined the Mothers Of Invention about 40 years ago. He performed and recorded with Bobby Bradford, Jon Carter, Carla Bley, Robbie Krieger,... And he's still performing on this very day, with Project/Object.

Essential stuff !!

ZAPPA - AMERICAN COMPOSER - the return of...

When I started this bog about a month ago, this was one of the first items that I mentioned.
Last week, I finally was able to browse through this publication, and I do have to mention it again.
Despite the fact that it's all in the Russian language, of which I don't understand one single word, this is one impressive book. It has a soft cardboard cover, it counts 300 4A format pages and it has an incredible amount of illustrations, pictures, book and album covers, tickets, etcetars.
It's what I would like the United Mutations files to be like...

Remember the samples, well, that's how the entire book looks...

This page welcomes contributions (in any language) from musicians from all over the world who fear that the Berlusconi administration is a danger to democracy and freedom.
We firmly believe that the fact that the Bush family has been shipped back to Texas should not distract us from other political diseases lurking in countries other than the US.
Non-musicians are welcome to visit the blog and leave comments and/or suggest lyrics for further musical adaptations.

"Berlusconi über Alles", the first track available on this page, is a hastily recorded punkish cover of a famous Dead Kennedys song Belgian band The Wrong Object (www.myspace.com/wrongobject) will record within the next few months and, hopefully, release before the end of 2009.
We look forward to your contributions and comments!

FIDO PLAYS ZAPPA

Swiss band Fido, or Fido Plays Zappa as they're also called, have a new album out.And it's no ordinary album. It's a DVD.

"On The Dental Floss" presents a recording of the concert that the band did in Basel on the twentieth of August in 2007. "So what's so special about this?", I hear you ask. Well, besides the fact that the band plays the music of Frank Zappa (and that they do a pretty good job at it), they also perform it on a raft, on a floating stage. It's a pretty spectacular and very beautiful sight.

Fido Plays Zappa treats the audience with some fine Zappa classics: 'More Trouble Every Day', 'Andy', 'Inca Roads', 'Take Your Clothes Off', ... They all get the powerful 10-piece band performance.
It's no wonder that the concert ends with "Montana", as the german word "Floss" stands for "raft".

A very fine concert in a superb-looking package.

ZAPPA STATUE ON TV

"Vlaanderen Vakantieland" is a Belgian television program. Last weekend, during a special on Vilnius (european cultural capital for 2009), the Zappa statue was one of the main topics.

Short, but sweet.

JEFF AUG'S "LIVING ROOM SESSIONS"

Acoustic guitar player Jeff Aug will be touring with Allan Holdsworth later this month. I can imagine that opening for a guitar giant like Holdsworth isn't the easiest thing to do.
On the other hand, there's probably no audience that is more into guitar playing than the people that visit Allan Holdsworth's concerts.

"Living Room Sessions" is a fine record. It's an all acoustic guitar album and it offers 15 short, impressive compositions.
My favourite tracks are the ones where Jeff gets the train rolling: up-tempo, pulsating bluesy and jazzy tunes like 'Boots On Fire', 'Hoedown on the Chicken Farm', 'Lousiana Voodoo Boogie', 'Passing Time' and the very powerful 'Chemical Funk'.
There are a couple of very nice lyrical, ballad-like pieces on the album as well. In all, it's an impressive record, even if it's food for guitar freaks (or geeks).
"Living Room Session" isn't about showing off ones technical capabilities. It's an impressive record that combines high energy songs with beautiful melodic tunes.
I like it.

PBS George Carlin Tribute & John Trubee on DVDs from Netflix

According to bassist Ivan Bodley who was there, comedienne Margaret Cho flashed the cover of my first record album 'The Communists Are Coming To Kill Us!' to the audience at the Kennedy Center during a George Carlin Tribute taped for PBS TV while presenting a bunch of items found in Carlin's storage locker after this death. Whether or not this is true and whether or not this segment is saved from the editing room floor is anybody's guess.

Below is the PBS broadcast date & time (CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS) for this historic event.

While I snort my obnoxious self-promotional spew, you can rent 2 DVDs from Netflix featuring yours truly: 'Jandek on Corwood' and 'Off The Charts: The Song Poem Story'.

You watch enough crap on TV. Why not watch something astounding and groovy for a change?

Modestly yours,

Your Humble Servant--John Trubee

The Eleventh Annual Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize will air on PBS stations nationwide on Wednesday, February 4, at 9pm ET. > check local listings

Taped at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on November 10, the 90-minute special features tributes and comic testimonials from a star-studded cast including Richard Belzer, Lewis Black, Margaret Cho, Ben E. King, Denis Leary, Bill Maher, Joan Rivers, Garry Shandling, Jon Stewart, and Lily Tomlin.

George Carlin combined a once-in-a-lifetime voice, a face that could do anything, and be anyone, an understanding of language that William Safire (or William Shakespeare) would have tipped their hats to and—oh yeah—he was fearlessly funny. Before George passed away, he learned he was receiving the Twain and was genuinely pleased about it.

“Thank you Mr. Twain," said Carlin. " Have your people call my people.”

Carlin was a Grammy-winning American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, whose career has spanned more than fifty years. Carlin released twenty-two solo albums and three New York Times best-selling books, which have sold over two million copies. The five-time Emmy nominated actor starred in an unprecedented fourteen HBO Specials and appeared in a wide variety of television and movie roles. He was the first-ever host of Saturday Night Live, and has appeared on The Tonight Show over 130 times.

The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was created in 1998 by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Mark Krantz, Peter Kaminsky and Bob Kaminsky and John Schreiber to recognize the art of humorists who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand." Carlin's family will be presented a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain, sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). The bust and its images are courtesy of the Mark Twain House, Hartford, Connecticut

Família de Frank Zappa perde processo na Alemanha

Família de Frank Zappa perde processo na Alemanha
Reuters - 29/1/2009 - Por Reuters/Billboard

Thomas Dippel, porta-voz do festival e chefe do fã-clube, elogiou a decisão judicial.

FROGG CAFE 2009 01 26

Dear Friends,

Happy belated New Years, I hope this e-mail finds you well!

NEW STUDIO CD in 2009
We are having a great time recording this new one and are getting towards the end of laying down all the tracks. This one is a beast to record compared to the our last studio efforts. It's going to be about 76 minutes of new music with more complex arrangements then we've ever tried to pull off before in several different progressive rock styles.

This one is with the original line-up of the band:
Nick Lieto - lead vox, trumpet, keys
Bill Ayasse - violin, mandolin, vox
Frank Camiola - guitar and chicken noises
James "sticks of fire" Guarnieri - drums and overall cuteness
Andrew Sussman - bass, cello, acoustic guitar

Plus an additional cast of thousands including John Lieto on trombone, Dennis Lippe (Foxy Moon Baby) on guitar, Steve Sussman (my old man) on clarinet, Vessela Stoyanova (Fluttr Effect and Goli) on marimba, and many more TBA.

More info soon....

If you haven't checked out Pandora Radio http://www.pandora.com you should, it's pretty cool and it's free. You guys got on us on there in the first place, they listen to you.

Thanks and hope to see you soon!
